A benchmark mapping the global scale and trends of the pro bono legal industry, compiled with data collected from over 100 law firms – both large and small – and representing 36,000 lawyers in 69 countries, the index illustrates a story of global growth and commitment to pro bono legal assistance. Firms all over the world were asked to provide information on how they organise their pro bono practice and how much pro bono they do in the different countries and jurisdictions they operate in. The index examines recurring factors that are the building blocks in developing a successful practice, represented by one simple metric that of how much pro bono is being done as a benchmark. Given the vast cultural and contextual differences around the world*, average pro bono hours per fee-earner in each jurisdiction is being used as the key metric to draw comparisons.
