It was one week after Singapore’s 50th anniversary. When most people were still in celebration mood, AVPN took our members on a community trail around Toa Payoh to understand some of the pressing social issues that abound within the estate. The community trail was conducted by the students of the NUS-Chua Thian Poh Community Leadership Programme.

The trip covered community spaces in Toa Payoh West neighborhood, which covered different residential housing types such as rented HDB for low income families, and the Senior Activity Centre.

Participants participated in open and honest discussions along the walk and debated on the roles of often ignored community participants like a roadside cobbler and the functions of a community garden.

It was a fruitful and eye-opening afternoon with many thought provoking discussions. AVPN is certainly planning to organize the community trail again!

About NUS Community Trails

NUS Community Trails’ journey began in 2012 when a group of undergraduates from the Chua Thian Poh Community Leadership Programme (CTPCLP) sought to rethink the place of ‘community’. They started with the Kampong Glam community and presented their findings through the means of a trail.
