Ilman has worked for nearly 20 years as a technical advisor and manager in various international organizations dealing with coastal and marine resource management, ecosystem restoration and conservation, climate change, and the fishing industry. Has a Bachelor's degree in Marine Science from IPB Bogor and a Ph.D. in Environmental Management from the University of Queensland, Australia. Ilman is also a member of the Technical Advisory Committee at the Asian Seafood Improvement Collaborative, a network of NGOs and private industry to improve the sustainability of aquaculture in Asia.
