As the excitement builds for the AVPN Global Conference 2023 and we have less than 20 days to go, our team is buzzing with anticipation. Amidst the multitude of inspiring sessions, Impact Investing Day on 21 June 2023 holds special significance for investors. This inaugural event is set to deliver a transformative experience that will shape conversations around impact investing in Asian markets. To gain insights into the preparations and aspirations behind the Impact Investing Day, we sat down with two masterminds behind the scenes: Komal Sahu, Chief of Sustainable Finance, and Xiaoning (Ning) Wu, Director of Sustainable Finance.

Setting the stage for AVPN’s mission, the Impact Investing Day brings together stakeholders from multiple sectors and geographies to mobilise capital for impact in Asia. It provides the perfect opportunity for collaborative action, networking, and positive change. By fostering conversations, we aim to empower investors to leverage collective resources, unlock capital, identify cooperative efforts, and exchange knowledge and best practices.

Agenda Highlights for Impact Investing Day

Komal: Let’s start with the core concept of impact investing. At its heart lies the intention to create positive outcomes. Impact investing drives investments aimed at generating measurable social and environmental impact along with financial returns. This win-win approach ensures that the success of investments is measured not only by financial performance but also the positive impact they create.

For this year’s Impact Investing Day, we meticulously curated an agenda that covers themes where knowledge and urgent action is needed, including healthcare, food security and agriculture, energy transition, decarbonization, and gender equity. Additionally, we will explore methodologies and structures like catalytic capital, blended finance, impact measurement, private market investments and finding the delicate balance between impact and financial returns.

Challenges in Crafting the Agenda

Ning: Developing the conference agenda for Impact Investing Day was quite a task! Impact investing is a dynamic field and therefore we had to carefully select the most critical and relevant topics for Asia, secure sector experts as speakers, ensure diversity and representation, effectively engage stakeholders and highlight emerging trends.

To overcome these challenges, we formed an impact investing committee composed of leading practitioners and worked closely with the larger AVPN team. Extensive research and regular feedback loops helped refine our process. Drawing from our past conference experiences, we gained valuable insights that guided us in creating an even more impactful and engaging conference for all participants.

Why You Should Attend

Ning: The Impact Investing Day serves as both a platform and an opportunity to foster crucial conversations around impact investing in Asian markets. We bring together leading limited partners (LPs) and general partners (GPs), which include Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), institutions, family offices, and impact funds to delve into these discussions. This day offers a distinguished lineup of speakers who will share key insights and best practices from their extensive experience. The audience will have a unique chance to gain knowledge about investment approaches and frameworks employed by top investors and institutions, as well as investment opportunities specifically within the dynamics of Asian economies. They can directly engage with our esteemed panellists, fostering networking and knowledge exchange.

Komal: And how can we forget our expert speakers who are at the heart of the Impact Investing Day. We are excited to have experts from all over the world, they are Dato’ Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir (Managing Director of Khazanah Nasional), Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan ( CEO of EPF), Belinda Tanoto ( Board of Trustees of Tanoto Foundation), Arsjad Rasjid (Chair of ASEAN-BAC 2023) and many others with a strong background in finance, technology, energy, healthcare, gender equality, and sustainability.

Given the enormous potential of high-growth opportunities in Asian markets and the growth in wealth in major Asian economies, however concentrated currently, Asia shows great promise and potential for impact investors looking to harvest both deep impact and financial returns. It is with this context in mind that we bring the Impact Investing Day to our audience, where top investors and leaders in the impact space will share their insights and experiences on a diverse range of topics,  from blended finance to healthcare to energy.

We want to introduce our audience to new learnings whether it is on latest impact monitoring and measurement (IMM) practices or recent developments in Artificial Intelligence, help them identify the current trends and how to leverage them to create greater impact. With our first ever Impact Investing Day, we hope to shift the paradigm surrounding impact investing, demonstrating it as a viable financial opportunity that can create positive change in the world!
