Overview

Founded in 2007, LGT Venture Philanthropy (LGT VP) is a global venture philanthropy foundation whose mission is to improve the quality of life of less advantaged people in developing and emerging countries. It supports organizations with outstanding social and environmental impact through local teams in India, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Switzerland. Key focus themes for LGT VP are: education (access to education), health (access to basic healthcare) and protecting/preserving the natural environment (terrestrial and marine conservation, Climate Change). LGT VP deploys ‘smart and innovative’ capital that includes non- programmatic/unrestricted grants, guarantees, and payment-by-results instruments, provides business and management know-how as well as access to relevant expert networks. To date, LGT VP has deployed USD 64.2m into 53 organizations with a current active portfolio of USD 28m in 18 organizations. In addition, over 150 business professionals called LGT Impact Fellows were matched with our portfolio organizations to strengthen their operational performance and provide additional business know-how. In 2014, LGT VP received the Sustainable Investment Award for «Best Social Impact Investor».

LGT Venture Philanthropy (LGT VP) seeks an experienced Investment Manager to strengthen its India team. An ideal candidate would bring significant deal execution, management consulting as well as thematic experience as well as an inquisitive mind and a passion to create impact.

The position allows the candidate to grow LGT VP’s portfolio in India by funding and building organizations that deliver critical goods and services in sectors such as education, healthcare and natural conservation. A strong alignment with LGT VP’s mission of improve the quality of life of disadvantaged people, contribute to healthy ecosystems and build resilient, inclusive and prosperous communities is essential. An in-depth understanding of issues and challenges related to development and poverty would be a significant advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Work as Investment Manager as part of the local LGT VP team and interact with a variety of stakeholders and take lead in identifying and developing new funding opportunities in thematic areas of our interest that are a fit with our values and approach
  • Lead funding opportunities through the complete investment process, including post investment monitoring and exit
  • Prepare, present and maintain detailed funding documentation for our global teams, as well as the LGT VP Board including ongoing reporting
  • Increase the positive impact of our portfolio organizations by intensively working with them and adding value in critical areas of strategy, operations, business development, organizational building and governance
  • Proactively develop and manage relationships with a wide variety of key stakeholders including potential investees, sector experts, consultants, policymakers, funders, and relevant thought leaders
  • Actively coordinate with the local and global teams to understand and track key metrics to monitor the performance of portfolio organization including their impact
  • Support team members in India as well as other regional teams on specific tasks related to deal screening, due diligence and execution as and when required
  • Proactively contribute towards building broader sector knowledge and expertise for our engagements in other regions
  • Work closely with our colleagues at LGT Lightstone, India, to identify synergies across the financial and impact return spectrum, including thematic synergies to create more impact

The ideal candidate would bring

  • 7+ years of relevant working experience, including at least 3 years of experience with financial and operational due diligence and ideally have 2 or more years of business consulting/operations experience in one of our core thematic areas
  • Ability to identify high-potential funding opportunities, with an intuitive understanding of innovative models and different entrepreneurial styles with a passion to create impact
  • An innate ability to strike strong working relationships with entrepreneurs and a variety of
    different stakeholders that form their eco-system, such as finance organizations, sector
    experts or policymakers
  • Proven track record of providing support to organizations at multiple levels including
    operations, strategy, and governance, through working with a variety of portfolio
    companies or through working directly in a key role within an organization
  • Experience with civil society, government or multilateral organizations, and/or philanthropy
    strongly preferred
  • Deep understanding of the broad philanthropic landscape in India, coupled with a strong
    (local) network in non-profit, policy and funder circles #
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, with an ability to work well within a global team,
    effectively interacting with potential partners as well as with a variety of people on the field
  • An entrepreneurial and analytical mindset being comfortable with ambiguity
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; with an ability to formulate and present
    analysis and arguments in a clear, crisp and concise manner to other team members, the
    Board as well as to the portfolio organizations
  • Fluency in English and Hindi
  • Humility and commitment to producing the highest quality of work, with attention to detail
    and follow-through
