Scaling Domestic Climate Philanthropy in India

Climate Action Series

VISION

Climate Action Series

Existing climate finance volumes are insufficient to meet the current climate goals in India, and will need to be supplemented with budget revenues, international climate finance, and private investments. AVPN will convene a series of events to galvanise more climate action in the philanthropic sector within the region.

Less than 2%

of philanthropy is focused on climate mitigation and even less on adaptation and resilience

INTRODUCTION

Addressing the issue

India recently faced its hottest recorded heat wave in over a century. Despite droughts, the region also faces the worst impacts of climate change, brought about by extreme weather resulting in floods, damage to livelihoods, and wildlife. In response to these events, India has set clear targets for Green House Gas (GHG) mitigation, and has diverted its resources to focus on climate mitigation. Far more needs to be done to adjust to the effects of climate change, to avoid worsening the situation and create mutually benefiting scenarios from these effects. Focus needs to be drawn towards climate adaptation.

India’s growing philanthropic market has seen approximately USD $9 billion in funding given to a variety of causes. Research findings have also revealed that in 2019, less than 2% of philanthropic efforts focused on climate mitigation and even less on climate adaptation and resilience. At the Conference of Parties (COP26), India had pledged to achieve ‘net-zero’ carbon emissions by 2070. The country had also announced enhanced targets for carbon emission reduction and renewable energy deployment. There is a need to increase the number of domestic philanthropic givers and raise awareness on the opportunities available to galvanise more climate philanthropy.

In order to achieve these targets, a NITI Aayog estimate indicates that the sector will require approximately $4.5 trillion to meet its infrastructure gaps. Existing climate finance volumes are insufficient to meet this goal, and will need to be supplemented with budget revenues, international climate finance, and private investment. Considering the above gap, there is a need to increase the number of domestic philanthropic givers and raise awareness on the opportunities available to galvanise more climate philanthropy.

Case Study Series

Peering through the climate lens

AVPN’s first case study series focusing on the intersectional areas of climate action in India. This call for action, has requested members to share their success stories in applying a climate lens into their portfolios. These case studies will be featured on AVPN’s Climate Action Platform, monthly newsletters and other media channels. This series will identify case studies that reflect strong proof points of applying or integrating a climate centric approach to an organisation’s portfolio. This will also serve as a means to identify a pipeline of organisations that may become co-investments options for funders who participate in the programme and mobilise other local philanthropists to allocate funding towards local NGOs.

VIDEO SERIES

Climate Impact Leaders

Climate Impact Leaders is a series of short dialogues to showcase impact leaders who have successfully embraced the fight against climate change and integrated positive climate action into their business models. The video series will cover varying viewpoints on lived experiences, collaborations, and local solutions to spotlight and share exemplary models of intersectional areas in climate philanthropy and action.

Capacity Building Workshop

Climate Pathfinders

The AVPN Climate Action Platform will be launching its first climate capcity building programme for decision-makers of philanthropic organisations and other grant-making bodies. The programme will aim to cross polinate regionally relevant ideas and concepts from like-minded individuals to develop learning opportunities and foster a shared understanding of climate action in India.

This pioneer cohort of AVPN Climate Pathfinders will be equipped with the tools and knowledge required to demystify the intricacies of climate intersectionality in the region and effectively incorporate climate action into their theory of change.

Utilising AVPN's resources and reputation, participants will also be given the opportunity to propel progress in critical areas to reshape the regional policy agenda and enable the more effective deployment of capital towards climate action.
