Problem

In India, the number of class 5 students in government schools able to read class 2-level texts declined from 47.6% in 2018 to 32.8% in 2020. Findings from a 2021 ASER study also indicated that enrollment in government schools has increased due to the high costs of private schools. This increases an additional burden on the education system in India, one which the government may not be adequately equipped to handle alone.

Across India, there are non-profit organisations that are already leading the way in reforming education. However, much more can be done to achieve the full potential of such organisations if not for the lack of resources available.

It is clear there is a pressing need to help these organisations to increase their impact and outreach, and Atma has the solution for this.

Solution

At Atma, we aim to address the issue of the lack of resources in non-profit organisations focusing on reforming education. We operate pan India to provide both intensive and short-term support to NGOs in various formats, such as partnerships spanning across 1 year or 3 years, workshops and project partnerships.

Through an accelerator programme we have designed, we aim to provide support in the following ways:

  • Partnership- Building co-shared responsibility and accountability of capacity building
  • Processes- Establishing robust processes and systems; providing implementation guidance
  • People- Providing expertise by providing access to dedicated Atma consultants and skilled volunteer support; Atma leadership as advisors
  • Linkages- Develop the organisation’s network by providing resource linkages to social sector experts, the network of peers and mentors, and exposure to sector updates
