Among earth’s 7 billion people, around 1 billion have no access to the power grid and spend approximately $27 billion annually on lighting and mobile-phone charging based on kerosene, candles, battery torches, or other fossil-fuel powered stopgap technologies. These traditional solutions are expensive, harmful to health, hazardous, and polluting. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), the use of candles and kerosene-burning lamps emits 190 million tons of CO2 annually and leads to 2.5 million deaths directly caused by fire every year. Another 2.8 million people die from lung diseases each year, mainly due to inhalation of smoke in small living spaces; most of these casualties are children, owing to their more vulnerable respiratory systems. Another serious problem for BOP is that they have no access to education and health care knowledge, so the death rate is extremely high in BoP (bottom of the pyramid) area.
We are trying to replace kerosene and candles with solar lighting, which is totally green and environmental friendly. We design a solar reading light called Candles Killer. BoPs spend 5-month cost on candles; one Candles Killer can be used for 36 months. Solar lantern is designed with USB charging port and solar home lighting system that can light up to 3 or 4 rooms and charge more than one mobile phone at one time. To provide BoP channels for education and health care information, we designed solar media to play videos and improve the education rate and reduce the death rate. To make solar products more affordable for BOP, we are developing PAY-AS-YOU-GO software platform so that BoP can do the payments by monthly.
