Problem

Assistive Technology is designed to improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities. In Singapore, Engineering Good supports people with disabilities by providing them with technology solutions that would enable them to live lives of opportunity.

To support digital inclusion, Engineering Good also addresses the issue of the digital divide by giving out laptops to those who cannot afford them and technological support to low-income communities. At the same time, providing a home for old electronics is a great purpose of this sustainability initiative through reducing e-waste.

It is clear that there is a pressing need to tackle the issue of inclusivity for vulnerable communities, and Engineering Good has the solution for this.

Solution

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented demand for laptops for home-based learning and remote work. Singaporeans rallied around Engineering Good's call for donations to refurbish, repurpose and redistribute laptops with a rapid turnaround time.

Refurbishing electronic devices extends the useful life of devices. Our organisation grew with this need – refurbished devices are redistributed to our beneficiaries via a network of over 200 community partners.

In 2022, EG rolled out a new initiative, Laptop Fixers Community, reinforcing reusability while simultaneously training volunteers to repair laptops within their own neighbourhoods. The initiative aims to benefit vulnerable communities by extending their device lifespan.

The main overall impact and outcomes we hope to achieve are:
  • Access to computing devices creates socioeconomic opportunities for the marginalised
  • The creation of jobs through upskilling
  • Reduction of e-waste
