Problem

Southeast Asia (SEA) is among the fastest growing world regions. The international community is increasingly aware that SEA will be a decisive factor when it comes to combating climate change due to plans for coal power.

Greenhouse gas emissions triggered from energy generation are the most important issue to tackle. What is most striking: clean energy technologies and their cost are no longer the main limitation to their deployment. Just a few examples: solar energy is cheap today, wind is increasingly competitive, energy efficiency technologies could be deployed at much faster pace. There are other reasons why we are not advancing faster in deploying these technologies.

In most countries in the world the energy sector is dominated by deeply ingrained centralized and top-down structures (governmental or large enterprises). However, we are now challenged to transform energy supply structures all over the world.

Solution

It is the mission of New Energy Nexus SEA to support these energy entrepreneurs to become successful. We work with universities and their researchers to build business models around their innovations. We support young aspiring entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into businesses and scale it domestically and overseas. Energy tech startups are designed to bring innovation into markets. They are starting to emerge in the energy sector and are beginning to significantly disrupt established energy players. Be it innovative customer engagement, mobile payment solutions, data for smart grid control, vehicle-to-grid technologies etc. energy tech is already making a mark in the sector. The fast-movers are shaking up the sector by using data, software and new technology. This will allow for smart energy technologies to be scaled across the globe and contribute to achieving the energy transformation we need. We create programs to support local entrepreneurs to build and bring these new solutions to market.
