There are 300,000 adults and 23,000 children in Vietnam who are blind. Many of these patients are completely treatable if they can access the eye care they desperately need. During the pandemic, entire health systems had to prioritise fighting COVID-19, and many eye care facilities had to make the difficult decision to provide only emergency care. In addition, the pandemic has disrupted eye care training like never before, and the world has yet to see the full impact of these decisions on eye care.
When eye care professionals get the training they need, patients get the quality eye care they deserve. Now, eye care professionals are at risk of falling behind in their training to enter the workforce or lacking critical resources for pursuing essential professional training through continuing medical education.
Finally, as eye care teams return to work, they face a huge backlog of cases as well as new challenges for ensuring patient safety while still delivering essential sight saving care.
Orbis has always been a leader in pioneering solutions to tough challenges. We are now working with the Ministry of Health in Vietnam to ensure the protocols are applied at all of our hospital partners across Vietnam - meaning people can still access eye care during the pandemic.
In 2020, more than 200 partner institutions around the world implemented COVID-19 prevention protocols provided by Orbis. Our plans in Vietnam are to address the constraints of the eye care system due to the COVID-19 pandemic through four key strategies:
- Expanding quality pediatric eye care services in more regions across the country
- Strengthening human resources for delivering eye health care
- Increasing the availability of eye care services for people with diabetes.
- Using our cutting-edge technology platform, CyberSight, to deliver training, mentorship and use of Artificial Intelligence to continue our work during covid lockdowns.
