One of the communities at the base of the pyramid in the Philippines include the hundreds of thousands of underprivileged women who relocate from small islands to work in industrial zones/special economic zones (SEZs) (“industrial parks”).
70% to 80% of the employees in these parks are female. Most are breadwinners of their families who remit savings back to their rural home provinces. Due to the lack of formal accommodation options in these industrial parks, most migrant workers currently share unsafe, unsanitary mixed-gender apartments with multiple people per room through informal accommodation options provided by local homeowners.
Female migrant workers face health and safety issues due to housing insecurity. The health and safety issues disproportionately impact female migrant workers and have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
At PeoplePods, we are building safe, sanitary dormitories for these female migrant workers, giving them a better life in an environment that allows them to live in dignity. We provide professionally-managed dormitory communities that are safer, cleaner and have more amenities than other options in the area.
We are conscious of the sustainability and impact our work has on the environment. Each PeoplePods-designed building can offset 1,459 Tons of CO2e emissions due to negating the need for shuttles, centralizing appliances, roof-top solar, and minimizing concrete use.
We also aim to help traditional real estate developers (industrial parks or local apartment developers) integrate environmental sustainability into their core operations. This can be done indirectly through industry leadership as the first mover in the industrial housing segment or directly via the minimum standards for local apartment developers to sign onto our web-based booking platform.
CO2e offset by a PeoplePods-designed building was estimated through quantifying 3 key parameters — lower energy consumption (residential), minimized concrete use and negated need for buses to shuttle workers.
