Problem

In India, 465 crore of plastic bottles are imported annually. India ranked #2 globally in Plastic Waste Production and imports plastic waste from other nations due to inadequate systems and incentives for waste retrieval.




The mismanagement of plastic waste arises due to fragmentation, lack of transparency, lack of traceability in the collection-to-processing chain, inadequate support for informal waste workers, and absence of inclusive employment and basic rights. Notably, 3-4 million individuals rely on scavenging waste from landfills and dumpsites for their livelihoods, facing an unfortunate absence of job security, fair compensation, and dignity. Addressing these issues is paramount to establishing a circular economy and ensuring the sustainability of the plastic waste management ecosystem in India.
