Problem

India, with around 8 million people living as victims of human trafficking, is among the top ten countries with the largest estimated absolute number of people in modern slavery. The COVID-19 crisis has further exacerbated the situation.

Studies reported that with growing poverty thousands, especially children and young girls became vulnerable to abuse, exploitation & trafficking across the globe. This has created larger pools of vulnerable persons who, due to the worsened economic situation, are being recruited for labor or sexual exploitation. With a substantial decrease in the conviction rate of trafficking cases from 22% in 2019 to 10.6% in 2020, the situation has become much more volatile.

Trafficking is a deep-rooted, systemic issue with multiple levels of causative factors. It is a violent crime which involves prolonged and repeated trauma, which may also result in short- and long-term physical injuries, risk of serious illness, poor reproductive system & sometimes death.

It is clear that there is a pressing need to tackle the issue of human trafficking in India, and Vihaan has the solution for this.

Solution

In Vihaan, our objective is to save lives and break the cycle of crime. The rescue process is defined at three levels:

  1. Pre-rescue: through which information is collected and vetted by the team before sharing the same with the state authorities for further action
  2. Rescue: through which we assist the state authorities with rescue operations for all forms of trafficking, sexual abuse, exploitation & missing person cases
  3. Post Rescue: through which we provide critical care & support during (trauma counseling, recording of statements, medicals, admission in shelter home) to all victims during rescue & post-rescue. The social workers journey with the survivors to rehabilitate them. Legal support is provided to help get access to justice.

Through this there would be a reduction in the prevalence of crime through deterrence facilitated by arrest and judicial custody of the accused and a safe and secure space is ensured for every victim removed from the situations of abuse and exploitation.
