Thailand’s education suffers from problems of quality and equity. By the age of 15, an average Thai is 2 academic years behind OECD average. These problems are most evident in high-needs schools, such as those under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, where students are 4 academic years behind in reading skills compared to students from higher-income backgrounds. As problems in education becomes the foundation of other societal, political and economic issues in Thailand, our current system needs leadership and commitment to solve its problems. As problems in our education stemmed from deep-rooted causes, it is crucial that all sectors of society - public and private - accurately understand these problems, in order to collaborate within and across sectors for progressive change and provide equal, quality education for all.
Our solution is to recruit exceptional Thai young professionals and graduates from top universities of all academic disciplines - such as engineering, arts and business - to provide inspirational teaching in low-income schools for a period of two years. Through on the job training, our participants work to improve students’ academic achievements, develop character and nurture essential skills to enable students to choose a path of their own volition and shape a better life for themselves and those around them. During the two year placement, participants are motivated to deeply understand Thailand education’s problems and develop a deep conviction by solving the issue first hand with their students. This awareness will enable them to continue making long term impact in different sectors. As our ambassador network grows, Teach For Thailand is creating a community of leaders who can collectively work to address problems and implement change for a more equal and quality Thai education.
