Climate change will continue to have a disproportionate effect on the poor due to an overwhelming dependence on agriculture and natural resources and a limited resilience to natural disasters. People living in rural or semi-rural environments are particularly vulnerable, often lacking access to safe water and reliable energy sources. Social enterprises and local grassroots businesses can play a vital role in helping fill these service and access gaps through sustainable solutions that help vulnerable populations meet their growing energy demands. While these organizations are helping to reduce poverty and vulnerability through market-driven services and products, they often struggle to reach scale and grow their impact due to a lack of access to affordable debt capital.
This is where the Pioneer Facility comes in. The Pioneer Facility will aim to bridge the so-called “Pioneer Gap” by providing affordable debt capital for social enterprises producing and distributing sustainable energy, clean water, and sanitation solutions to low-income populations in Asia. The Facility will help shift the current financial landscape by enabling donors and investors to redefine traditional finance delivery models; demonstrating the feasibility of investing in these social enterprises while scaling positive sustainable development impacts.
