Problem

Blessed with amazing natural beauty and rich natural resources, Nepal is a country abundant in art and culture. However, it faces a slew of environmental issues and struggles with high unemployment, and slow economic growth. This despite having a significant young and skilled workforce. A major cause of unemployment is the caste system that runs deep in the Nepali society and discriminates against the lower classes.

DOCHAA was born out of our desire to fight discrimination, to use resources sustainably, to protect the environment, and to empower women and youth that are among the marginalized in society. We want to preserve local art, culture and traditions. DOCHAA is inspired by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal #8:Decent Work and Economic Growth. Our goal is to drive grassroots innovation in Nepal and become a world-famous brand. We want to create local employment and foster sustainable practices that protect the environment. Our high-quality products can have a global reach.

Solution

DOCHAA is a socially conscious, innovative, and sustainable global brand. We are working with local artisans and women’s groups to promote art and skills, so people have decent and dependable sources of income. DOCHAA is also providing dignified labor to the shoemaking community that faces discrimination in Nepal.

As we embark on an ambitious plan to expand our business, we are committed to employing and supporting more and more skilled artisans, and at the same time addressing the problem of unemployment through local manufacturing.

Right now, we are working with women’s groups in Lalitpur and Thimi, to weave traditional fabrics that are used as raw material for our shoes, and to produce accessories and packaging bags. DOCHAA will benefit the marginalized, disadvantaged, and unemployed communities in Nepal.
