Founded in 2016 by Dr Charles CHEN Yidan, core founder of Tencent Group which is the largest and most popular Internet service portal in Mainland China, the Yidan Prize has a mission to create a better world through education. The Yidan Prize, which bestows HK$60 million (around US$7.8 million) worth of awards annually starting from 2017, is divided into two categories: The Yidan Prize for Education Research, which recognizes outstanding research that contributes in significant ways to education, and the Yidan Prize for Education Development, which recognizes innovative ideas that tackle important challenges in the field of education. Each Yidan Prize Laureate will receive a gold medal and HK$30 million (around US$3.9 million) worth of awards, which include a cash prize of HK$15 million (around US$1.9 million) and a project fund of HK$15 million. Through a series of initiatives, the prize serves to establish a platform that allows the global community to engage in conversation around education and to play a role in education philanthropy.
