Achieving the SDGs: The Impact of Racial Inequality in Development Economics
Addressing the role of race and structural barriers to accessing finance in sub-Saharan Africa

Racial inequality remains a challenge globally, as has been highlighted in the recent protests around the world following tragic events in the US. The term “systemic racism” is now frequently used, but what does this mean practically, and what does it mean in terms of access to capital and grant funding in the development sector? For example, are expats and Western-led organisations favoured over African entrepreneurs and Global-South led initiatives? Are investments in Africa used effectively to empower people or do they stimulate unhealthy dependence on donor funding? To advance racial equity and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, it is of vital importance that structural barriers are removed. But how do we identify these barriers within our own organisations, and importantly, what do we do about it?

Kevin Govender, Director of the Office of Astronomy for Development at the International Astronomical Union in Cape Town, and Dr Tawanda Chingozha, Development Economics Fellow at the Office of Astronomy for Development, will share their experiences on this topic and perspectives on the impact of race in development economics in sub-Saharan Africa.

Join us on Thursday 16 July, 11am CEST, for this virtual Impact for Breakfast session.
