At TED in 2013, activist & fundraiser Dan Pallotta delivered a ground-breaking talk, since been viewed by a global audience of over 3.4 million people that fundamentally challenges the way we look at charity, philanthropy, and ultimately leadership.
In his talk he calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend — not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). In this bold talk, he says: Let’s change the way we think about changing the world.
Real change, however, is only going to happen if we are able to move beyond siloed industry conversations and begin to rethink how we look at both philanthropy & leadership as a web of cross-sectoral synergies across business, government, and non-profit / social enterprise initiatives. It will also happen if leaders are informed by and have experiences across different industries or sectors whether sequentially over their careers, or simultaneously through their work cutting across sectors.
