Pathway to Climate Action and Economic Growth for Resilient Futures
South Asia is undergoing a transformative period marked by rapid urbanization, intensifying climate impacts, and the pursuit of economic development. The region is projected to add nearly 600 million residents to its cities within the next three decades. This surge will create 10 megacities, home to approximately 200 million people by 2030. This urban expansion is occurring alongside increasingly severe climate events, including heat waves, cyclones, droughts, and floods, which are disrupting livelihoods and overwhelming infrastructure. As cities grow and populations rise, so does the demand for energy, resources, and infrastructure, driving a sharp increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which in turn intensifies climate impacts. Therefore decarbonizing economic growth is crucial to mitigate emissions, reduce South Asia’s climate vulnerability, and safeguard livelihoods.
Workshop Overview
Recognizing the urgent need for a balance, the global community is increasingly focused on enhancing urban liveability. The AVPN’s Climate Action Platform is therefore bringing its Climate Pathfinder programme to Chennai, a city at the forefront of climate action. As a member of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, Chennai demonstrates a strong commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 to build a sustainable future. Tamil Nadu as a state has also emerged as a frontrunner in sustainable development, securing the third position in the SDG India Index 2023-24 with a composite score of 78, surpassing the national average of 71. The impressive performance in the SDG India Index further underscores the state’s dedication to sustainable development, making it an ideal location for AVPN’s Climate Pathfinder programme.
