Social Investment has a variety of different formats, this spectrum spreads from philanthropy, corporate social responsibility to impact investments. Governments across the Asian region have decide to support the social sector through public private partnerships especially with regards to social finance. Corporates and philanthropists are looking at their CSR and grant making through a strategic lens. In a landscape such as this, catalytic networks such as AVPN play a key role. AVPN is the home of more than 195 Asian social investors, venture philanthropists and foundations committed to using venture philanthropy and social investment tools to achieve societal impact. Our core mission is to increase the flow of financial, human and intellectual capital to Social Purpose Organisations (SPOs), and for those resources to be deployed as effectively as possible to address key social challenges facing Asia today and in the future.
The session will deep dive into the current international developments in the social investment sector as well as explore the Indonesian social investment sector with a view to highlight the key opportunities and challenges.

Douglas Miller, Chairman AVPN
Doug is an American citizen who lived for 30 years in the UK before moving back to the USA from where he travels extensively to Asia and Europe. He has a 38-year career in investment banking and private equity. He is founder of International Private Equity Limited, a fund placement boutique.
Doug was a founding trustee of Impetus Trust in the UK; founding chairman and honorary president of European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA); and founder of European Venture Philanthropy Fund.
He has been active in philanthropy for 30 years – mainly in education, the environment and microcredit. Following the success of the EVPA that now has more than 150 members, Doug has been developing the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network of which he serves as founding chairman.
Mochamad Ridwan Kamil, Mayor of Bandung
Known by his nickname Emil, Mochamad Ridwan Kamil is the incumbent Mayor of Bandung. He was elected as mayor of Bandung on 23 June 2013. He is an Indonesian architect and lecturer in the Department of Architecture, Bandung Institute of Technology. Emil founded architect firm Urbane Indonesia in 2004 with three partners.
In 2006, Emil was the Indonesian winner of the British Council’s Young Creative Entrepreneur award, representing Indonesia in the International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year award. In 2009, Emil was selected as the Architect of the Year by Elle Decor magazine.
Sandiaga Uno, Uno Kapital
Sandiaga Uno was born in Rumbai, Pekanbaru, Province of Riau, Indonesia on June 28th, 1969. He is the founding partner of Saratoga Investama Sedaya, an investment firm he co-founded with Edwin Soeryadjaya in 1998. Saratoga focuses its investments in natural resources, infrastructure, and consumer products and services in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
Sandiaga currently holds key positions among others at PT. Adaro Energy Tbk, one of the largest integrated coal companies in Indonesia. He co-founded a boutique investment firm, PT Recapital Advisors and founded PT Uno Kapital, a social investment firm.
Sandiaga graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Wichita State University in 1990 and obtained a Masters of Business Administration from George Washington University in 1992. He was awarded the Indonesian Entrepreneur of the Year by Enterprise Asia in 2008. Sandiaga is Asia Society’s Asia 21 fellow, class of 2008.
Veronica Colondam, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, YCAB Foundation
Veronica Colondam is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of YCAB Foundation, an organization that aims to provide hope and opportunity to underprivileged youth through educational provisions, capacity building and welfare creation. To date, YCAB has impacted the lives of more than 2.5million youth and is aspired to reach ten million by 2020.
Veronica has also pioneered the socially responsible investment program in Indonesia that allows social investors to invest with a near-market rate return and a five-year pay back period. The investment is made through YCAB Co-operative that runs the conditional microfinance where education is made the pre-condition to the loan. To date, YCAB Co-operatives has disbursed more than 120,000 loans thus increasing clients’ income from the average of U$1.8 to U$3 per day following a two year intervention and bringing thousands of school dropouts back into education.
Through her leadership, in 2013, YCAB ranks 74 out of 100 in the Global Journal’s Top 100 NGOs. In 2015, YCAB ranks 63 in the Top 500 NGO by Global Geneva. YCAB Foundation is also one of the few NGO in Asia to receive the UN-ECOSOC Special Consultative Status, and achieving ISO certification for quality assurance.
Veronica serves as a member of the international board of INSEAD Social Entrepreneur Global Council and Microsoft Youth Council, and she actively participates in the WEF’s Young Global Leaders alumni network. She is the youngest recipient of the UN-Vienna Civil Society Award (2001), named Asian of the Year by Channel News Asia (2009), Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year (2011) and Schwab Social Entrepreneur of 2012 and Forbes 48 Asian Philanthropists (2014).
Veronica holds an undergraduate degree in mass communications and earned her MSc from Imperial College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Diseases. She also studied social entrepreneurship at INSEAD, Global Leadership at Harvard’s Kennedy School and Impact Investment at Oxford Said Business School.
