AVPN’s capability development model (CDM) is an organizational development road map relevant to a set of five venture philanthropy (VP) practice areas designed to help members make sense of best practices and frameworks in the sector. In this webinar we start off with the first practice area of pre-engagement processes. This will be part of a series of webinars related to the CDM model which we will be introducing in the next few months.
The challenges of Pre-engagement often are to locate suitable deals and make due diligence affordable and efficient. The first step in the social investing journey is to locate impact and investment-ready organisations and to screen and structure the engagement so that it is mutually beneficial for investor and investee. In the AVPN capability development model (CDM) this is captured in the practices under the first area of Pre-engagement.

About the Speakers:
Shilpa Sudhakar is the Director of Operations and New Initiatives and one of the founding members of Caspian Impact Advisers. She has over a decade of experience in the Impact sector and has been instrumental in setting up and executing Caspian’s Fund activities and operations, including Fund Structuring, transaction structuring, Investor relations, Capital raising and Risk management.
Shilpa is currently leading a few key new initiatives for Caspian including the setting up of CII, an onshore dedicated impact Debt Fund, while continuing to oversee risk and operations.Prior to Caspian, she spent 3 years with the BASIX Group as Company Secretary, in charge of statutory and regulatory compliance and corporate governance. Shilpa is a Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). She also holds a Degree in Law from the University College of Law, Hyderabad.
Avishek Gupta is the Investment Manager at Caspian and his role is to identify and manage investments across Caspian’s focus sectors. Before Caspian, Avishek was Director-Capital Markets at IFMR Capital, a structured debt finance firm, where he worked on both deal origination and market placement (debt securities) roles. Avishek helped in setting up the debt business in small business lending and affordable housing finance sectors at IFMR Capital and enabled debt finance for several financial institutions through plain vanilla debt, securitisation and other structured products. Prior to this, Avishek managed the incubation of a portfolio of start-ups operating across dairy, agriculture, rural tourism, drinking water and rural energy supply chains.
Avishek has completed B.Tech (Dairy Technology) and M.Sc. (Dairy Chemistry). He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management from Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA).
Martina Mettgenberg Lemiere is Assistant Director of AVPN’s Knowledge Centre. She builds on over seven years’ experience of leading applied research for businesses and non-profits with a focus on human capital, education and impact. Most recently in Singapore, she led projects at INSEAD and the Human Capital Leadership Institute. Concurrently, she mentors students in entrepreneurship and financial literacy at the micro-business school aidha. Previously, she worked in business research and consulting in India for Evalueserve and other organisations, particularly focusing on banking and financial services. She also taught at the Universities of Manchester and Sussex and worked as an independent consultant for NGOs and investment agencies in London and Manchester in the UK.
She holds a PhD from Manchester Business School and an MSc and BA (Hons) in Anthropology from the University of Sussex and Manchester respectively.
