Sustainable livelihoods in the agriculture sector, in times of climate change, is a daunting challenge faced by emerging economies like India. The collapse of the agriculture ecosystem would mean collapse of the food system hence it is important for agriculture development in India to be supported through a sustainable approach. An effective investment strategy is to make the farming communities resilient by building their capacity. Using Agriculture Extension to strengthen the communities has shown to greatly improve farmer productivity. There are enough employment and welfare programs run by the Indian government. There is a need to collaborate for last-mile efficiencies.

AVPN members Axis Bank Foundation and Dr. Reddy’s Foundation are working on the same lines for improving the lives of millions of smallholding farmers. Listen to them share their experiences and learnings.

• Throw light on key elements of community institutions to ensure community participation and ownership at each stage of agri-based sustainable livelihoods.
• Throw light on approaches to work in tandem with the government and national priorities.
• Share insights into the use of ‘Agriculture Extension’ in improving agriculture returns for low-income farmers.

Jacob Ninan Executive Trustee and CEO, Axis Bank Foundation A banker with over 30 years’ experience in the sector, Jacob is associated with Axis Bank Limited since 2000, He used to head the Bank’s businesses in the Middle East and Africa before leading the philanthropy initiatives of the bank and its subsidiaries through Axis Bank Foundation(ABF). With a passion for ‘giving back to society’, he currently oversees the work of ABF and guides the team in scaling outreach through nurturing collaborations in the development space.

Suman S Senior Manager-Rural Livelihoods, Dr. Reddy’s Foundation Suman leads Rural Livelihoods initiatives of Dr.Reddy’s Foundation. He brings more than a decade of professional experience in leading skilling initiatives for youth, agriculture and rural livelihoods programs. His passion in rural initiatives is to develop scalable models for improving the small and marginal farmers and promoting rural entrepreneurship. His areas of interest are solving adaptive social issues through collaboration and entrepreneurship promotions for the bottom of the pyramid. Originally from Hyderabad, Suman holds a master’s degree in management.
