General statistics states that around 5-6 percent of people in India are estimated to be persons with disabilities, about 90 percent of them are either unskilled or unemployed and only about 1 percent of them are employed in formal employment. In this context, Dr Reddy’s Foundation (DRF) a not-for-profit organization is committed to respond to this challenge through its livelihood Program.
The Organization’s focus on Persons with Disability was incepted in the year 2010, by initiating exclusive skilling centers across India for aspirants with Disability. The Organization till date has trained over 10000 aspirants with a placement record of 70 percent through its 20 centers. This training has been imparted through our innovative model called GROW. This model greatly empathizes on assured skill shift of Persons with Disability through rigorous training in core employability skills like; English, Communication Skills, Aptitude, Personality Development, Interview Skills, Digital Literacy, Work Readiness etc. Through this model, the Organization’s aim is to train and place aspirants with increased success rate in placement and also increase the number of companies hiring Persons with Disability.
Accordingly with this goal of increasing awareness among employers on employment process of persons with disability and to understand their challenges in implementing the same, DRF planned for sensitization workshops in different cities in India under its broader campaign called Breaking Barriers at workplace. The main objectives of this workshop are:
- To increase knowledge and awareness of employers in relatively lesser impacted places and trigger the thought of including persons with Disability in their work force.
- To enable the employers to share the real issues and challenges related to employability of Persons with Disability in mainstream work force and advocate for its change.
- To develop the participating employers as positive change agents who will in turn advocate for employability of Persons with Disability in mainstream work force.
