Drawing from case studies and his experience at one of the world’s foremost change-making institutions, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, workshop leader Lowell Weiss, together with facilitator Kevin Teo (AVPN) will engage with participants on the Art and Science of Effective Giving. The workshop will explore innovative approaches to Philanthropy, outline Principles and Practices of Effective Giving and empower participants to develop the frameworks and next steps to enable them to think and act in new impactful ways for social good.

As part of the workshop, case studies on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation will be reviewed and discussed. Lowell will also present and work with participants through the process of developing an effective and thoughtful giving strategy. If you are new to the philanthropy sector, this workshop will help you jumpstart the learning process and get started quickly. If you are responsible for your organization’s philanthropic strategy, this workshop will help you gauge the effectiveness of your plan based on lessons learned from established practitioners.

Target audience for this workshop: Current and future philanthropists, high net worth individuals, family and corporate foundations, family offices and senior advisors or representatives of all these.

Profile of workshop leader

Lowell WeissLowell Weiss has spent more than two decades working to spark social change, from a unique set of vantage points and across a broad array of local, national, and global issues. At Cascade Philanthropy Advisors, he provides personalized guidance to donors seeking to deepen their impact, with services ranging from designing new initiatives to implementing focused advocacy efforts to engaging family members.

Prior to founding Cascade Philanthropy Advisors, he served in a leadership role at one of the world’s foremost change-making institutions, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Among his many responsibilities, he served as staff director of the internal team responsible for providing Bill and Melinda Gates with analytical insights on how to make highest and best use of Warren Buffett’s historic gift. During his time at Gates, Lowell drew upon a wealth of knowledge he previously gained as the director of the chairman’s office at an equally innovative foundation, the Morino Institute, which invests in improving the lives of at-risk children in Greater Washington, DC.

As Special Assistant to the President in the White House, Lowell traveled extensively with the President Bill Clinton, wrote more than 150 speeches for him, and served as a key communications strategist on issues ranging from the environment to economic development. Before that, Lowell served in a similar capacity with Vice President Al Gore, wrote a New York Times bestselling book with political consultant James Carville, and served as an editor at The Atlantic Monthly. Lowell graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College.
