Impact Measurement Course

This one-day course is designed and organised jointly by AVPN and Mekong Economics Ltd (MKE), and supported by Investing in Women.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Know how to best define, measure and manage ‘doing good’
  • Learn to identify, justify and measure the most appropriate social and economic impact measures for projects and organisations
  • Understand that a robust set of impact metrics derives from a sound Impact Statement and Theory of Change, as well as from meaningful direct and proxy indicators

Who should attend:

Corporate sustainability decision makers, impact investors and grant-makers looking to understand their impact goals and how to evaluate the metrics presented by the organisations they support.

The agenda for this interactive workshop will include:

9:45 am: Group Activity: Drafting Impact Statements and Indicators

11:00 am: Exploring theories of change
12:15 pm: Lunch
1:30 pm: Hearing inspirational examples of analysing impact
2:00 pm: Measuring social and economic impact in approaches such as gender-lens investing
3:45 pm: Refreshment break
4:00 pm: Introducing IRIS+, the Impact Measurement Project and SoPact
4:30 pm: Discussion on why academics hate the indicator approach
5:00 pm: Summary of key takeaways

ABOUT THE TEACHER
Dr. Adam McCarty has over thirty years of experience working in Southeast Asia in a development context both academically and professionally. During this period, he held various positions, such as Lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London; Lecturer at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague; Speech Writer to the Deputy Prime Minister in Papua New Guinea; and Region Director for MDF Consulting (where he designed an impact evaluation course).

In 2001, Adam established Mekong Economics Ltd, where as Chief Economist, he has led or been involved in over 150 consulting assignments over the past two decades. Assignments have included dozens of baseline, mid-term and endline surveys and evaluations in Vietnam, Myanmar, Timor-Leste and elsewhere.

Adam has extensive knowledge of socio-economic development and issues in the region, including publications and presentations about trade policies and agreements, state enterprise reform, democracy, and financial sector liberization. He holds a doctorate in Economics at the Australian National University, Canberra.
