Impact Investors Council (IIC) was formed almost 2 years ago and has 30+ Impact Funds operating in India as members. Currently, our only focus is for-profit social impact investors and for-profit social enterprises. This is a big sector in India and we do believe that India will become a world leader in Impact Investing, partly because we need to solve problems for 300 million poor and partly because of the rich history of social enterprises dating back to early 1970s. To date, since 2001 when the first Impact Fund was established, our members have invested over $7.5 billion (cumulative) as follows:
- $2.5 billion core investments, directly targeting underserved beneficiaries, in primarily 9 sectors (financial inclusion, agriculture, education, healthcare, clean energy, skills development, water, sanitation, affordable housing)
- $5 billion non-core investments, i.e., responsible for indirect impact, primarily in Climate Change and Rural Infrastructure
For India, it is critical that the world quickly agrees on definitions and standards which will allow transnational pathways for Social Impact Investments to flow. In this pursuit, we are hosting our first (of annual) Conclaves, with the Ministry of External Affairs of India, from 15-17 November. The event for Investors and Funders only, will bring together a group of 125-150 investors from around the world.
