AVPN Friday sessions are casual get-togethers once a month for our community and friends, whereby we choose a topic of interest, and have some key speakers start the conversation off.
Speakers:
Angel Theodora, Regional Humanitarian & Emergency Affairs Director at World Vision
Parminder Singh, South East Asia Managing Director at Twitter
The Asia-Pacific region is the most disaster-prone region in the world. According to the Asia Development Bank, for the past ten years 80% of disaster-related deaths globally have occurred in Asia-Pacific. The nearly 3 billion people who live here contend with over 70 per cent of natural disasters worldwide, and APEC economies suffered USD68 billion annually in related costs from 2003 to 2013. There is a need to build up capacities before a disaster occurs and be better prepared to deal with the hazards around us. How can different organizations cooperate and coordinate to be better prepared to respond to future disasters? How can partnerships be developed and our strengths shared and leveraged? What would pre-positioning and preparedness/execution plans look like? How can social media and IT applications help to improve disaster response? How can the private sector and NGOs collaborate effectively to improve disaster management as a whole?
