Report Launch: How Lack of Documentation Drives Modern Slavery

Join us on Monday, 9th September, to uncover the hidden struggles of the estimated 850 million people worldwide who lack official identity documents. A crisis that disproportionately affects women, youth, rural families and migrants.

Despite extensive evidence highlighting the myriad challenges faced by people who lack access to official documentation—including social stigma, economic marginalisation, lack of political representation and legal protection—the links between a lack of documentation and risks of modern slavery remain unexplored.

To bridge this critical evidence gap, the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR) and the Freedom Fund have joined forces to examine the intersection between modern slavery and access to official documentation.

This event will launch our groundbreaking research report, bringing together insights from global experts, grassroots leaders and survivors from affected communities in Brazil, Kenya and Nepal. We’ll explore how individuals fall into the plight of lacking documentation, the impacts of being undocumented and exploited, and potential policy solutions to address these pressing issues. Be part of this vital conversation and help us pave the way for effective change.

This event will be hosted in English, with Nepali and Portuguese interpretations.
