Climate Action SERIES
Accelerating Asia’s just and inclusive journey to net zero
VISION
Climate Action Series
Our vision is a thriving regional climate ecosystem that accelerates Asia's transition to a net zero, climate-resilient future—one that is inclusive, just, and rooted in local innovation and collaboration across geographies, sectors and capital flows. Therefore, AVPN will convene a series of events to galvanise more climate action in the philanthropic sector within the region.
Less than 2%
of philanthropy is focused on climate mitigation and even less on adaptation and resilience
INTRODUCTION
Addressing the issue
Asia is home to over 60% of the world’s population and remains one of the most climate-vulnerable regions globally. In recent years, the region has witnessed record-breaking heatwaves in China and Southeast Asia, severe typhoons in the Philippines, devastating floods in Pakistan and Thailand, and prolonged droughts across Central and South Asia. These compounding climate impacts have damaged livelihoods, disrupted economies, intensified food and water insecurity, and placed biodiversity at heightened risk.
While several Asian countries have committed to bold climate mitigation targets—such as Indonesia’s net-zero pledge by 2060, Vietnam’s Just Energy Transition Partnership, and Singapore’s Green Plan 2030—climate adaptation continues to receive insufficient attention and funding. Despite being disproportionately affected by rising temperatures, extreme weather, and sea-level rise, vulnerable communities across Asia often remain excluded from long-term adaptation planning and investment. There is a pressing need to rebalance priorities and direct more resources toward locally-led, inclusive adaptation strategies that build resilience for those most at risk.
Asia’s philanthropic landscape is growing steadily, yet climate philanthropy accounts for less than 2% of total philanthropic capital across the region, and even less toward adaptation and resilience building. For example, in Southeast Asia alone, philanthropic funding for climate-related causes remains largely fragmented and small-scale. This represents a missed opportunity to mobilise local leadership and capital toward transformative climate action.
To meet the region’s sustainability goals, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) estimates that developing Asia requires over $1.7 trillion annually in infrastructure investments through 2030. Public financing and international funds alone are not sufficient. There is a critical need to catalyse domestic philanthropy, leverage blended finance, and build cross-sectoral partnerships to bridge the climate financing gap and drive inclusive, people-centric climate transitions.
What we do
What we want to achieve

Promote Local Leadership
Support initiatives that directly contribute to reduction of up to 1 giga tonne(Gt) of CO₂e emissions and enhance climate resilience for 100 million vulnerable individuals through targeted adaptation projects.

Mobilize Capital
Channel and catalyse USD 1 billion by 2030, leveraging philanthropy, impact investment, and sustainable commercial investments to support high-impact climate solutions across Asia.

Facilitate Cross-Sector Collaboration
Bring together different voices and climate actors committed to address climate challenges, fostering partnerships through targeted and curated convenings.

Advance Learning
Develop thought leadership emphasising the urgency of climate mitigation, and its integration with adaptation and resilience outcomes, and facilitate knowledge exchange through reports, fellowships and impact measurement standards.

Strengthen the Ecosystem
Support capacity building of impact organisations, policy and institutional delivery infrastructure to enhance climate action effectively and scale impact.
CLIMATE PATHFINDER PROGRAMME
Empowering leaders for climate resilience
Through its Climate Pathfinders programme, the AVPN Climate Action Platform is building the capacity of decision-makers, philanthropic organisations, climate experts, and grant-making bodies to take stronger action on Asia’s climate challenges. By fostering thought leadership, the programme designs comprehensive learning journeys that unpack climate change’s impact in the region and highlight the actions needed to address it.
Participants engage with leading experts from academia, think tanks, financial institutions, government, and other key stakeholders, while also benefitting from networking opportunities to connect, collaborate, and exchange best practices. To further build capacity, the programme offers tailored experiential workshops on specific thematic areas for deeper engagement, alongside opportunities to launch research reports, share practical tools, and present case studies that foster learning and informed action.
SUSTAINABILITY DIALOGUE SERIES
Surfacing cutting edge solutions and sustainable business practices
Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) is a concept familiar with most businesses and financers and its importance is expected to continue growing as Asian governments are setting up national plans, ambitions and regulations for a low-carbon future as part of the Paris Agreement and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Case Study Series
Peering through the climate lens
AVPN’s first case study series focusing on the intersectional areas of climate action in India. This call for action, has requested members to share their success stories in applying a climate lens into their portfolios. These case studies will be featured on AVPN’s Climate Action Platform, monthly newsletters and other media channels. This series will identify case studies that reflect strong proof points of applying or integrating a climate centric approach to an organisation’s portfolio. This will also serve as a means to identify a pipeline of organisations that may become co-investments options for funders who participate in the programme and mobilise other local philanthropists to allocate funding towards local NGOs.
VIDEO SERIES
Climate Impact Leaders
Climate Impact Leaders is a series of short dialogues to showcase impact leaders who have successfully embraced the fight against climate change and integrated positive climate action into their business models. The video series will cover varying viewpoints on lived experiences, collaborations, and local solutions to spotlight and share exemplary models of intersectional areas in climate philanthropy and action.
Unlocking capital into climate action
The Climate Action Platform aims to unlock capital in a more targeted and effective manner into climate solutions.
