High Carbon Stock Approach (HCSA)

HCSA core mission is halt deforestation resulting from commodity production. Launched in 2014, HCSA is a widely recognised practical, field-tested methodology to implement commitments to no deforestation in the tropics, while ensuring the rights and livelihoods of local peoples are respected. This has allowed major plantation and supply chain actors to reduce their environmental and social impact by not clearing forests or buying products from the conversion of HCS forests that have high carbon and biodiversity values, as well as supporting customary rights and local community livelihoods. As of March 2019, the HCSA has aided the prevention of deforestation of several million hectares of tropical forests and has over 500,000 ha of HCS forests in process towards long-term conservation.
