Shape Effective Practices

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to effective venture philanthropy across the world, and certainly not in Asia. The AVPN Knowledge Centre invites you to share your organization’s experience and journey into effective venture philanthropy and contribute to what works in practice.

We aim to make this as effortless as possible for you and offer four routes:

Participate in the Membership Survey

In 2016, we started creating a baseline of VP practices and designed a short 15mins member survey to capture your practices. This will help us benchmark the sector’s practices. Participants will receive an early preview of survey results and will be kept updated on the overall venture philanthropy trends in Asia.

Share your own case

Examples of this route can be seen under each practice area, such as Portfolio Management.

The process involves seven steps:

  1. Discuss the angle and process for the case study
    • Which area do you have insights to contribute to?
    • Is there material you can share upfront that we can build on? Are there sources we should be careful about, e.g. an outdated website?
    • This can be done by email or phone whatever is more convenient
  2. We will research available material and produce a first draft with outstanding questions based on this
  3. We will send over this first draft and the questions and ask for a time to discuss the questions
  4. We do a 30-60min interview with you on the outstanding questions and note down your answers
  5. After the call, we integrate this into the case and send the next version with any outstanding questions back to you.
    • This is the point, where we see some iterations, as we would like to capture individual solutions that you found as well as understand how they can help others.
    • Cases are similar, but also different, as we try to highlight every organisation’s uniqueness to help other organisations find their style.
    • We only finish when we are both happy with the product.
  6. Once you approved the draft, we will do a final spell and grammar check as well as include the Creative Commons license 4.0 at the bottom of the page.
  7. Finally, we upload the case to our website, send you the link and a word as well as pdf version for your records.

Cases are also used in workshops such as the Capacity Building workshop in India and Taiwan. In the workshops we invite representatives from case organisations, ie. EdelGive Foundation, Toolbox Foundation India, DBS Foundation and Social Ventures Hong Kong, to share their practice with participants in the workshop.

Offer to contribute a quick portrait

Under Impact Assessment, we only have three full-length cases. For the AVPN’s Guide to effective IA assessment, we produced 13 quick portraits along selected questions, which can be found at the end of the guide.

From the participants’ point of view, this meant 30mins of their time for an interview and two rounds of checking at the pre-layout stage and then in final layout to ensure everything was correct and met expectations.

For readers, this presents a quick, tangible overview of practices and may inspire action.

Partner with us on longer reports to shed light on selected topics

We are open to partner with members to conduct surveys or in-depth research. In 2015-2016, we partnered with DBS Foundation to explore social incubation. The AVPN-DBSF study on social incubation can be found under the Capacity Building are. These research reports can be scoped in different ways. Contact us to discuss what works best for you.

For you, this means that we explore a topic for you in-depth while you focus on your core activities.

For readers, this means that they benefit from the overview created and may again use this to inspire their own action.

What are the benefits for you?

You set the bar in terms of venture philanthropy.

You are making a difference in terms of helping others in the sector move up.

What effort is required from you?

Very little overall, but it depends on your engagement model with us. We will be upfront about what we need from you and aim to minimise the time it takes.

For all of these, we’d like to highlight some things to remember:

  1. It is supposed to be very little work for you, as we research, write and finalise the case on our end.
  2. However, please be prepared to share material with us and set time aside to answer our questions (60 mins), reply to our emails with follow-on questions and finally make sure the approval process including running this past your corporate communications department is done correctly
  3. Nothing gets published without the organisation’s approval
  4. Keep it practical – beyond marketing, the intention is to allow others to learn, so please share some of your real hurdles, solutions and, if you can, your current challenges.
  5. While we start with a whole list of points to cover for the general framework in each practice area, we also divert for each organisation’s case with the purpose of capturing the richness of individual solutions. This is the art in the science!
  6. We publish each case on our website under the Creative Commons License 4.0, so that others can use it non-commercially as long as they attribute and use the same license. More information can be found under: Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.
  7. While we make exceptions for organisations with outstanding practice expertise, generally you need to be a member to publish a case with us. This means, please ensure your membership fee has been paid in full. We are unable to publish the case otherwise.

We look forward to hearing from you. Please contact us at
