East West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation

East West Seed (EWS) has 35 years of experience in market-oriented plant breeding for vegetable seeds in the tropical lowlands. EWS has developed lead positions in Asia; it is expanding markets in Africa and has a unique focus on smallholder farmers. In 2019, EWS won global recognition for its social and business impact through the Access to Seeds Index and World Food Prize. For 20 years, EWS has invested in intensive pre-commercial farmer training as an essential core to its business model. It focuses on field-based activities which lead to profitable and sustainable vegetable production in smallholder communities. Trained farmers are often able to double their incomes and supply local areas with higher volumes of safe vegetables year-round, thus generating positive livelihood and nutritional impacts. Since 2015, EWS has trained 300,000 farmers in 11 countries and has ambition to reach 1M in the next 5 years.
