The George Institute is a leading independent global medical research institute established and headquartered in Sydney, with major centres in China, India and the UK, and an international network of experts and collaborators.
We focus on the global health challenges that cause the greatest loss of life and the greatest impairment of life quality. Non-communicable diseases collectively cause over 70% of all deaths worldwide, or 41 million people each year, including 15 million people dying prematurely aged between 30 and 69. Over 85% of these premature deaths are in low- and middle-income countries. Injuries claimed 5 million lives in 2015, the majority of which are in low- and middle-income countries. Compounding these issues is the fact that millions of people worldwide do not have access to primary health care.
To address these challenges, our research is focused on:
- Better Treatments: Finding better treatments for the world’s biggest health problems
- Better Care: Transforming primary health care to support better health for more people
- Healthier Societies: Harnessing the power of communities, governments and markets to improve health.
In 2018, The George Institute was named by the Times Higher Education as the leading most impactful, medical research organisation in Australia and the third leading medical research organisation in Asia.
