Crawford School of Public Policy is a unique institution at the Australian National University (ANU) and in Australian Higher Education. A research-led, professionally oriented graduate school, it combines the ANU mandate to address issues of national and international significance with a deep and long-standing commitment to improve public policy capability, and an entrepreneurial culture, to achieve positive and sustainable impact on individuals, institutions and societies. Crawford began as a national centre for development economics working specifically in the region. It evolved over time into a broad ranging, multi-disciplinary, global school that retains a firm commitment to the Asia-Pacific and to analysing Australia’s contribution in the region. Crawford’s profile and purpose position it at the heart of the ANU’s new Strategic Plan. This plan emphasises the role of the university as a positive contributor to ‘societal transformation’, through research, education and public policy engagement. It reaffirms the national mandate and its commitment to research excellence and allies this to excellent education and an appreciation of ANU’s role in the Asia-Pacific.
