Established in 1896 as Nan Yang College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the first national institutions of higher learning in China. Today, it is a dynamic and comprehensive university for excellent students education, cutting-edge scientific research and social service, and has been developed to the talent education idea of knowledge exploration, capacity development and personality nurturing. By December 2015, SJTU has had 29 schools/departments, 26 directly-affiliated institutions, 14 affiliated hospitals, with 15, 971 undergraduates and 29,895 postgraduates in 26 programs covering 9 major disciplines: economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and arts. Center for the Third Sector was founded in 2006. Since then it serves as one of the major institutions devoting to the study of nonprofit and civil society in Eastern China. By the end of 2015 the Center has published nine issues of China Third Sector Research and has launched several grand projects in the field of social organization and philanthropy studies.
