The Global Innovation Fund (GIF) is a charitable social-first investment fund whose mission is to find, fund, and scale-up cost-effective, evidence-based innovations that have the potential to measurably improve the lives of millions of people living on $5 a day or less in the developing world. GIF was established by the UK and US governments as an independent vehicle to invest in innovation without the constraints faced by government aid agencies. It is funded by DFID (UK), DFAT (Australia), SIDA (Sweden), DST (South Africa), and USAID (US).
GIF deploys grant, equity, and debt investments to support a range of innovators across the globe to accelerate the development, rigorous testing, and scaling of evidence-based and market-tested innovations. In a short time, it has developed a portfolio of over 40 grant and risk capital investments in sectors that include agriculture, domestic resource mobilisation, early childhood development and education, gender, family planning, health and nutrition, and skills and youth. Over 80% of GIF’s current investments are in the Commonwealth.
