Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) set up the Hindustan Unilever Foundation (HUF) in 2010 to support and amplify scalable solutions that can help address India’s water challenges – specifically for rural communities. In partnership with governments and NGOs, HUF has initiated the ‘Water for Public Good’ programme to promote democratization of water governance via citizen-led institutions. The Foundation’s programmes help empower local village institutions to improve & manage their water resources and catalyze behavior change amongst farmers to adopt judicious water-use practices.

Over the last nine years, HUF has supported grassroots projects in 53 districts with 23 NGO partners across nearly 5,000 villages. Over 7,300 people’s institutions including water user groups, self-help groups, farmer groups and federations have been supported through the Foundation’s partnerships. These partnerships have helped create over 700 billion litres of water potential. This quantum of water is equivalent to meeting the drinking water needs of 600 million people for an entire year. Working with over 120,000 farmers; nearly 70,000 hectares of land has been brought under improved water use practices. These practices have also resulted in an increase in crop quality and quantum, yielding an additional 8 lakh tons of agricultural production.
