Established in 1965, SEAMEO is a regional intergovernmental organisation among the 11 governments of Southeast Asian countries to promote regional cooperation in education, science and culture to enhance the quality of life across the region.
The SEAMEO Secretariat serves as the executive arm and headquarters of SEAMEO. It is responsible for implementing the policies, decisions, and directives of the SEAMEO Council (the 11 Ministers of Education) and overall coordination of the 26 SEAMEO Regional Centres of Excellence and Networks.
SEAMEO Secretariat is currently implementing the Developing Research Excellence and Mentorship in Southeast Asia (SEA DREAM) Programme in strategic partnership with Wellcome and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. SEA DREAM funds regional consortia to conduct high-quality discovery and translational research that addresses national and regional health priorities, as well as emerging issues. It seeks to build research excellence by generating impactful studies that inform real-world solutions, policies, and interventions; cultivating research leaders and developing talent; strengthening regional research networks; and fostering equitable and sustainable research ecosystems.
SEAMEO Secretariat also implements programmes such as the Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM) with UNICEF, ASEAN, ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF), and UK FCDO as well as the ASEAN-UK Supporting the Advancement of Girls Education (SAGE) Programme with UK FCDO and British Council.
