The mission of the Global Fund for a New Economy is to build the strategic, resource, and institutional capacity of those working in concert to build a political economy that is fundamentally inclusive, sustainable, and that nurtures democracy. Founded in 2024, the Global Fund for a New Economy accomplishes its mandate in four ways. It catalyzes thinking and planning that is strategic in nature, ensuring that increasing numbers of actors are building a leaderful, forward-looking field. The Fund mobilizes new resources by cultivating donors and other revenue sources. Focusing on key geographies, the Fund works to strengthen the infrastructure of the field, be it think tanks or demonstration projects, community organizations or communications networks. Finally, the fund catalyzes special projects and initiatives that accelerate the growth of the sector and supports critical transnational connective tissue such as conferences or publications.
The founding stakeholders of the Global Fund for a New Economy include the Hewlett Foundation, Open Society Foundations, the Ford Foundation, and the Omidyar Network. At its inception, the Fund selected ten countries which will serve as the focus for infrastructure building work: Brazil, India, the United States, South Africa, Kenya, Germany, the United Kingdom, Colombia, Mexico, Indonesia. GFNE has identified two initial policy arenas of focus: the political economy of the green transition/green industrial policy and the political economy of AI and new technologies.
