Entrepreneurs who have a technology solution that can protect or save lives before, during and after natural disasters can apply for the AVPN-Prudence Foundation Disaster Tech Innovation Programme, which was launched in Singapore earlier this week.

Organised by Prudence Foundation, the community investment arm of Prudential in Asia, and the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN), a Singapore-based funders’ network, the programme aims to support organisations that have innovative and viable technology solutions that can complement and enhance existing disaster risk reduction efforts in Asia-Pacific.

There is a need for innovative solutions that can reduce human and economic losses due to natural disasters in Asia-Pacific, which is prone to and affected by natural disasters. Risk exposure and vulnerability are heightened because the region has fast-growing populations and a significant proportion of poor and marginalised communities. Since 2005, more than 500,000 lives have been lost and 1.4 billion people have been affected by natural disasters, resulting in US$900 billion in economic losses, according to Reliefweb.

Participating organisations stand a chance to win grants from a total pool of US$150,000 to support the implementation and scaling of their tech solutions. Finalists will be invited to showcase their solutions and seek partnerships at the annual AVPN Conference in June 2019, which will be the largest gathering of social impact funders and resource providers in Asia, according to AVPN’s media release.

The application period is from Feb 20 to March 29. Successful applicants will be contacted by May 29. The pitching day will fall on June 24. For more information, visit https://avpn.asia/disaster-tech/
