In Bangladesh, cancer has emerged as a formidable health crisis, claiming over 150,000 lives annually, with thousands more suffering silently due to a lack of awareness, early detection, and affordable treatment. In 2012, amidst this grim reality, a small, heartfelt initiative took root—a few compassionate individuals started collecting donations to help cancer patients in need. Armed with determination and a belief in making a difference, this humble effort set out to bring hope to those battling the devastating effects of cancer. From 2012 to 2014, the “I Beat Cancer” initiative supported over 300 patients. This effort evolved into the ‘Responsibility Phase’ under the banner of BANCAF (2015–2019), where a dedicated team of more than 30 people came together to provide financial and emotional support to more than 500 cancer patients.

By 2019, the movement had become a beacon of hope and healing, marking its next chapter as BANCAT. This non-profit organisation raises awareness, with the ultimate goal of preventing cancer from becoming a major health problem in Bangladesh by preventing and diminishing suffering through education, advocacy, and service. Its mission is to prevent cancer from becoming a major health issue by raising awareness and alleviating the suffering of those affected.

BANCAT’s approach revolves around three core pillars: nationwide cancer awareness, holistic care for underserved patients, and mental wellness support for the cancer community. Through workshops, seminars, and medical camps, the organisation educates communities about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. Its youth wing, BANCAT Durbar, engages over 2,000 volunteers in impactful campaigns like Cricket for Cancer and seasonal drives, spreading vital awareness across the country.

It is also essential that underserved cancer patients have access to essential medical treatment and rehabilitation. By partnering with hospitals, healthcare professionals, and donors, the organisation provides physical and emotional care, empowering those in need. BANCAT also recognises the importance of mental wellness and offers counseling and support programs for patients, survivors, and caregivers, ensuring they are emotionally supported throughout their cancer journey.

Among BANCAT’s notable initiatives is Mosabbir Alok Nibash, Bangladesh’s first holistic cancer care home. This home offers free accommodation, meals, nursing care, and emotional support for patients traveling to Dhaka for treatment. The facility has served over 2,000 patients. Starting with 25 beds and serving 350 patients in its first year, the facility now accommodates 85 beds.

Another initiative, Alok Katha, supports mental wellness by providing a platform for cancer patients and their families to share stories and engage in therapeutic hand embroidery. We prioritise sustainability in every aspect of our work. All our products are thoughtfully packaged using eco-friendly materials, reflecting our dedication to protecting the environment. Most of the profits from our sales will go towards donations, directly supporting the rehabilitation and holistic care of cancer patients at Mosabbir Alok Nibash. A portion is also allocated to the attendants who create these products, empowering their livelihoods. In contrast, another portion is invested in marketing, logistics, and ensuring the initiative’s continued growth and impact.

BANCAT’s Alokon is a dedicated mental wellness center aimed at supporting cancer patients and their families, particularly those from privileged backgrounds. Recognising the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis, Alokon will provide accessible and effective mental health services, contributing to beneficiaries’ well-being and BANCAT’s financial sustainability. Proceeds from Alokon will directly fund the rehabilitation of underserved cancer patients, ensuring access to essential care and resources.

Looking to the future, BANCAT envisions the creation of Alok Boshoti, a 250-bed cancer care facility to be completed by 2028. The facility will provide affordable diagnostic, treatment, and therapeutic services, with a focus on holistic patient support, including pain management and end-of-life care. A sustainable farm initiative will also promote self-reliance and community resilience.

Together, BANCAT and its supporters aim to create a cancer-aware, compassionate Bangladesh, one step at a time.
