The Beauty Experiential Learning Programme stands as a transformative initiative meticulously crafted not only to impart essential beauty therapy skills but also to fundamentally redefine the agency and independence of the women participating in the vocational training programme. Specifically designed to train women for various roles in the Beauty and Wellness industry, this programme goes beyond conventional skill development by instilling a sense of entrepreneurship and autonomy in its participants.

Experiential Learning Programme for Increasing Women’s Agency and Independence:

Ownership and Commitment

In this programme, participants initiate their journey by making a nominal investment in beauty kits provided by the Sambhav Foundation, a deliberate move to foster a sense of ownership and commitment right from the beginning. This tangible financial contribution acts as a cornerstone, driving participants towards a heightened sense of agency over their professional and economic lives.

“Earn While You Learn”

At the heart of Experiential Learning is the innovative “earn while you learn” model. This unique approach allows participants to apply their acquired skills in real-world settings by providing discounted beauty services to actual clients. This not only hones their technical expertise—by repeatedly practising different beauty services— but also offers economic empowerment through income generation during the training period.

Financial Independence

Financial independence is a core principle of the programme. As participants cover their training costs through the services they provide, they liberate themselves from financial constraints, empowering them to make informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to their households. This newfound financial autonomy becomes a driving force in enhancing the overall agency of the participants.

Micro-entrepreneurship

Moreover, the programme focuses on cultivating a sense of community among participants, extending beyond the training period. This collective empowerment creates a support network, reinforcing each woman’s agency through ongoing encouragement, shared insights, and collaborative opportunities. The communal aspect adds a valuable layer to the participants’ sense of empowerment.

Agency Building

Beyond the realm of beauty therapy, the programme ensures that participants acquire essential entrepreneurial skills crucial for autonomy. Components such as financial management and marketing strategies are integrated into the curriculum, positioning participants not just as employees but as potential business owners.

The impact of the programme extends beyond mere skill development, influencing participants’ confidence and self-esteem. As women gain proficiency in beauty therapy and entrepreneurship, they undergo a transformative shift in self-perception, which empowers them not only professionally but also personally.

Community and Network Building

In essence, the Beauty Experiential Learning Programme represents a paradigm shift in women’s vocational training. It empowers participants not solely as skilled beauty therapists but as entrepreneurs ready to chart their course in the beauty industry and beyond. The programme’s holistic approach to skill development, financial empowerment, and community building creates a robust foundation for the participants to embrace and enhance their agency in various aspects of their lives.

Experiential Learning and On-the-Job Training

The Experiential Learning Model and On-the-Job Training represent two distinct yet valuable approaches to skill development. The Experiential Learning Model emphasises immersive, hands-on experiences in simulated or real-world scenarios, offering a structured curriculum with flexibility in learning pace. This approach focuses not only on job-specific tasks but also on broader skill development, specifically entrepreneurial skills. The key strength of experiential learning lies in its versatility — participants are exposed to the various facets of the beauty industry and the randomness of the real world where their decisions have business consequences.

In contrast, On-the-Job Training immerses individuals directly into the workplace, emphasising the immediate application of skills within the job’s actual context. It capitalises on existing workplace resources and provides direct feedback from supervisors, ensuring that skills learned are immediately relevant to the specific job requirements. While the Experiential Learning Model caters to a wide range of skills adaptable to various industries, On-the-Job Training excels in delivering targeted, job-specific expertise, fostering immediate proficiency in workplace tasks.

Moreover, the Experiential Learning Model brings an additional dimension to the table by fostering agency and independence, particularly beneficial for women in the programme. Through its immersive and empowering nature, this approach not only hones skills but also instil a sense of ownership and commitment among participants. The flexibility and varied skill set offered by experiential learning contribute to enhancing the overall agency of individuals, providing them with a broader perspective and the ability to navigate diverse professional scenarios. This empowerment aligns with the programme’s goal of not just imparting job-specific skills but equipping participants, especially women, with the confidence and autonomy needed to excel in their chosen fields. On-the-job training, while highly effective in immediate task proficiency, may not inherently emphasise this broader agency-building aspect to the same degree. Therefore, the Experiential Learning Model uniquely contributes to the holistic development and independence of participants in the programme.
