The climate crisis is arguably the defining crisis of our time with more than 3.3 billion people living in areas highly vulnerable to climate change. The impact of climate change on people’s health and wellbeing not only directly but also in terms of the connection between climate hazards and social and economic determinants of health.
Given the dynamic nature of interaction between the planetary systems and social, economic and environmental determinants of health, AVPN is pleased to share with the investor community our learnings from consultations with more than 17 experts and investors, curated in the “The Climate & Health Opportunity Primer” report. Within the pages of the Primer, readers will find impact pathways and opportunities in adaptation responses to counter the effects of climate change on public health (refer Figure 1 above).
This primer serves as a clarion call to social investors (refer Figure 3 below), urging them to seize the opportunity to intervene directly and indirectly, catalysing innovation, fostering collaboration, and building the capacity of frontline organisations. Through targeted investments, strategic partnerships, and ecosystem-building initiatives, social investors can play a pivotal role in shaping a resilient future where the health of communities is safeguarded against the ravages of climate change.
AVPN will strive to build the field in this emerging area and nurture the ecosystem for more urgent action through our “Climate x Health: Lighthouse for Asia” in partnership with Bayer Foundation, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms, India Health Fund and Monash University. The Lighthouse will endeavour to ignite action at the Climate-Health nexus by a) aggregating knowledge for capacity building; b) incubating and validating innovations for effective adaptation; c) engaging policy shapers and practitioners; d) developing evidence-backed narratives to mobilise catalytic capital.
