Across Asia, nonprofit organisations (NPOs) are consistently at the forefront of addressing complex social challenges. They are expected to deliver meaningful outcomes—often with limited institutional support. While funding for programme delivery continues to grow, investment in organisational capacity-building has not kept pace. This gap is especially experienced among small and mid-sized, grassroots organisations. Yet, institutional capacity is not secondary to impact—it is its foundation. Recognising this critical gap, the Empowering Nonprofits for Amplified Impact initiative aims to transform how nonprofits in India and Indonesia access and utilise capacity-building support.
Why a New Approach is Needed
Findings from across both countries reveal a recurring pattern. Existing capacity-building support is often:
- Fragmented: spread across multiple platforms and networks, making it difficult to navigate
- Unevenly accessible: particularly for organisations outside major urban centres
- Short-term in nature: dominated by one-off training interventions with limited long-term impact
As a result, many nonprofits with strong community presence struggle to build resilient internal systems, from financial management and governance to human resource practices.
Ground Realities: Insights from India and Indonesia
The challenges faced by nonprofits in these contexts are not driven by a lack of intent, but by limited access to relevant and context-specific support.
- In India, organisations often face difficulties in developing robust Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) systems beyond compliance requirements. Additional challenges include financial planning, indirect cost recovery, and formalising governance and leadership structures.
- In Indonesia, access to structured capacity-building remains limited—particularly outside major cities. There is a growing demand for support in digital systems, internal operations, and leadership development, with many organisations still relying on informal networks to identify credible providers.
Three Practical Pathways to Strengthen Capacity
To address these challenges, the initiative provides an integrated ecosystem of support through three key pathways:
1. Finding Capacity-Building Providers
A curated directory enables nonprofits to identify credible providers across critical areas, including MEL, financial management, governance, human resources, fundraising, and communications, aligned with their specific contexts and needs.
2. Resource Directory
Not all capacity-building requires external support. A collection of practical tools, templates, and guides allows organisations to independently strengthen their internal systems, from data management to donor engagement strategies.
3. Ecosystem Insights
Research and landscape analyses offer deeper understanding of systemic capacity gaps and priority needs across India and Indonesia, informing more targeted and effective interventions by nonprofits, funders, and intermediaries alike.
