Uplifting Equitable Tech: Ensuring No One Is Left Behind in the Climate Change Tech Revolution

We are not starting on the same playing field when it comes to tackling climate change. In low-and-middle-income countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh, detecting and establishing climate change mitigation efforts are costly barriers to achieving climate goals. Through the AVPN APAC Sustainability Seed Fund 1.0 (APAC SSF 1.0), supported by Google.org and ADB, projects like the Common Carbon Protocol have revolutionised access to tech solutions like generative AI, sharing knowledge across borders to accelerate realisation of SDG 13 (Climate Action) for all.

When we’re thinking about the future of climate change, all organisations must align priorities and goals to tackle key challenges effectively. However, not every country and organisation is equipped with the right resources to address these challenges.

From artificial intelligence (AI) to calculating complex carbon equations, Coalition for Our Common Future (COCF) is making ripples in creating equitable strides towards a carbon-free, collective future.

COCF is a nonprofit organization aiming to mitigate climate change by facilitating knowledge amongst global organisations through what they call the Common Carbon Protocol. This platform exists to increase the number of Green House Gas (GHG) mitigation projects across Asia by solving a key information gap—common challenges encountered by the lack of centralised information sharing amongst the Asian agriculture industry.

How exactly does the platform work?

The platform integrates user-created methodology to provide an open source knowledge sharing platform for any researcher, nonprofit, or individual to learn more about the current resources and systems that already exist. They integrated two key technologies: Carbon Calculator (CAL), which assists in simplifying complex carbon equations, and the Carbon Impact Map (CIM), which showcases international technologies and ongoing projects mitigating climate change. Through the platform, COCF has been able to create 100+ tracking systems, create USD 33 Million worth of impact, and reduce 30MT of CO2 during the one year of implementation.

Innovative impact organisations like COCF, funded by funds like APAC SSF 1.0, are trailblazers in transforming information sharing on a shared vision of mitigating climate change on a global scale.

Through technological innovations like Common Carbon AI, countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh can bypass the substantial costs of setting up climate change mitigation projects, leveraging existing research, data, infrastructure and learnings from across the globe.
