The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), in partnership with Catalyst at Large and Sagana, launched “Gender Lens Investing Landscape – East and Southeast Asia,” the first report in the region to provide a landscape of gender lens investing (GLI) investment vehicles in both public and private markets. Serving as a springboard for capital deployment strategies, this report aims to inspire investors interested in GLI and asset managers who wish to create GLI investment vehicles. The data of this report is based on the Wharton Social Impact Initiative for private market, and Veris Wealth Partners Public Market Scan for public market. In addition, over 20 interviews with fund manager were conducted to better understand the motivation, structure, language, and incentives motivating GLI investment vehicles.
- GLI is an emerging and fast-growing strategy in Asia: GLI capital invested in Asia grew 80% in 2019 to USD 1.2 billion.
- Asia has the second-largest number of public market and third-largest number of private market
investment vehicles. According to our research, there are at least 32 GLI private market and 10 public market investment vehicles targeting investments in Asia.
- GLI investment vehicles in Asia cover a wide range across almost all asset classes, and appeal to a highly diverse set of investors including, pension funds, family offices, high net-worth individuals, government agencies, development finance institutions, and philanthropic institutions.
