For many faith-based investors, values play a critical role in guiding their investment choices. Impact investing offers a vehicle for investors to move beyond screens and directly translate their values into measurable positive and intentional impacts while still pursuing their financial objectives. Given this potential for impact, the GIIN has launched an initiative to work more closely with faith networks and investors such as faith based investment firms and mutual funds, to deepen its connection with the faith-based investing community and support their commitment to impact investing.

What is the Faith-Based Investors Hub?

Launched in September of 2020, the Faith-Based Investors Hub provides a space for faith-based investors to engage in peer learning and find opportunities through collaboration to amplify their respective efforts to drive a greater mobilization of faith-based assets into impact investing.

The Hub is open to participants that share the goal of deepening the commitment of faith-based asset owners across geographies and across faiths to use their values to construct investment portfolios seeking to deliver positive and intentional impacts.

Participants in the Hub include a range of institutions and networks that are collectively trying to understand how to introduce impact objectives into their investing, and learning how to apply these with the same discipline as other considerations such as financial return and risk.

How the Hub will help us get there:

Quarterly, the participants of the Hub will meet to deepen connection, engage in peer learning, and coordinate their efforts. Through networking and collaboration, the Hub will both amplify existing efforts and create the space to develop new joint actions. Additionally, participant-led workstreams will create a space for collaborative work.

Faith-based investing: A special series in partnership with Pioneers Post

What role are faith-based investors playing in the impact investing movement around the world – and what can others learn from them? The following four articles, released in a special series in partnership with Pioneers Post, shed light on the power and potential of faith-based investing.

Scaling new heights: how faith-based investing can reach its potential

  • In this Pioneers Post article, the first in a series in partnership with the GIIN, Iqbal Khan, CEO of Fajr Capital, reflects on how far faith-based investing has come. Speaking to the evolution of the faith-based investment community, Khan highlights the importance of faith groups joining forces to collaborate and allocate capital. Khan writes, “The Global Impact Investing Network’s Faith-Based Investors Hub, for example, is a unique platform for action that brings together investors from Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions to explore how faith-based investors can collaborate to deepen the impact potential of their investment portfolios and advance global development agendas, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Paris Climate Agreement.” Read more >

How redemption and covenant guide me as an impact investor

  • In this Pioneers Post article, the second released in this series, Vanessa Bartram, Managing Partner of Zora Ventures, reflects on how redemption and covenant guide her as an impact investor. Bartram writes, “As we seek this minute yet measurable change, we are reminded that this is a long journey that requires many partners, each of us playing a small but necessary role. Business education must evolve. A faith-based lens can help relocate its purpose

  • In this Pioneers Post article, the third released in this series in partnership with the GIIN, Atul K Shah, a Professor at City University, shares his thoughts on how business education must evolve using faith-based approaches to guide a new model that’s fit for the modern age. Shah writes, “To ignore faith communities in these times is to damage the very fabric of society that can lift us out of this climate and sustainable development crisis. There is an opportunity for us to work together in a new way. Faith leaders and communities provide us with a unique, untapped opportunity for sustainable development – they can bring long-term purpose, conscience and public interest, and nourish trust and relationships, rather than deplete them.” Read more >

Faith-based investing can have meaning only in practice

  • In this Pioneers Post article, the fourth released in this series in partnership with the GIIN, Mathew Jenson of FaithInvest, shares his thoughts on how religious groups can engage with impact investing to create the social and environmental impact that faiths around the world want to see. Jenson writes, “As a global faith-based membership organisation, FaithInvest works with our members on a wide variety of investment policy statements, reflecting the particular values of many different faith traditions. In my role as a member of the investment solutions team at FaithInvest I've had the opportunity to work with a number of members who, having articulated their value statements well, struggled with the subsequent task of translating those values into appropriate investments. There are many tools and tactics available for faith organisations to use to implement their investment policies, three notable categories of which – often used in combination – are screening, engagement and impact investing.” Read More >
