About

Since August 2014, Katsuji serves as Executive Director of Japan NPO Center (JNPOC). Founded in 1996, JNPOC is a national infrastructure organization for Japan’s nonprofit sector and nonprofit organizations (NPOs), especially those which were incorporated under the 1998 NPO Law. Katsuji also serves as Board Chair of CSO Network Japan (CSONJ). CSONJ plays advisory and facilitating functions concerning roles of CSOs (civil society organizations) to solve global issues with a focus on the engagement with the private sector. CSONJ currently runs a project to disseminate the concepts and practice of developmental evaluation to Japanese practitioners. Beyond these two primary roles: • Since 2016, Katsuji is actively involved in Social Impact Measurement Initiative (SIMI), a multi-sector collaboration in Japan to promote social impact measurement and management. As a part of this initiative, Katsuji is involved in American Evaluation Association’s TIG (Topical Interest Group) on social impact measurement and other initiatives overseas; • In July 2017, Katsuji was elected as Managing Director of Japan Civil Society Network on SDGs (SDGs Japan), a newly formed civil society coalition in Japan working on advocacy and awareness-raising to achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). Between 2007and 2013, Katsuji was in Johannesburg, South Africa, working for CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation. He joined its senior management in 2008 as Deputy Secretary General and was Acting Secretary General in 2012. He provided overall leadership for the coalition that played an active role to strengthen civil society and citizen action throughout the globe, including the effort to facilitate the process for civil society to effectively participate in the UN-led post-2015 development/sustainability agenda. Katsuji lived in the San Francisco Bay Area in the U.S. in the 1990s and gained nonprofit management experience by founding and directing Japan-US Community Education and Exchange (JUCEE) in 1996. He was in the Bay Area till 2000 and was its President/CEO in Tokyo in 2000-04.
